Not many people know this, but Street Organics came about when my doctor diagnosed me with adrenal exhaustion 4 years ago. After doing home-based therapy with my son, 7 days a week for 4 years, writing a book about the experience (and our resulting success), my body was telling me that enough was enough. Tired? It Could Be Adrenal Fatigue

We’ve all been there. Burning the candle at both ends. Soldiering on, even though our bodies need rest. Donning the invisible superhero cape and just getting on with the task at hand.
After all, that to-do list won’t do itself.
But is your body sending you warning signs that enough is enough?
The adrenal glands are two little organs which sit on top of the kidneys. They release adrenaline and cortisol in response to stress. That’s usually a good thing – these hormones make us faster, stronger and sharper-thinking. It’s part of something called our “fight or flight” response. Perfect if we’re in danger and need to act quickly.
Unfortunately these days as busy women, we come across small amounts of stress at almost every twist and turn. Getting the kids ready for school, traffic jams, busy jobs, juggling work and family, and the constant stimulation we receive from being continuously connected to social media and the internet. This day-to-day stress is cleverly disguised as just being “busy.”
But our adrenals can’t tell the difference. The result? They’re constantly in overdrive.
If the stress is left unchecked, our cortisol levels become elevated, leading to a range of annoying symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, a constant “wound up” feeling, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar fluctuations, food cravings and weight gain.
But still we ignore the symptoms and power on through. Because we’re strong. We’re resilient. We’re too busy to get sick. We’ll just push through now and rest later.
Eventually our adrenals have nothing left to give. We begin to experience constant tiredness, poor immunity, low blood pressure, and muscle aches and pains. We can’t deal with stress anymore. Coffee doesn’t work anymore. It’s hard to get out of bed each day.
Boom. Adrenal fatigue.
There are adrenal tonic herbs that we can take. There are wonderful supplements available to prop our bodies up. These are all a great way to get started, and an essential part of healing in many cases. But if used alone, they’re simply band-aid solutions. They don’t heal the core of the problem.
In the end it all comes down to this:
A nourishing, DIET, time out to RELAX, and gentle EXERCISE.
We don’t need to become super clean-eating, om-chanting, blissed out yogis (who’s got time for THAT?). We don’t even need to activate our almonds (note: bonus points if you do!). But we do need to become mindful of our bodies’ delicate balance. Increased stress = an increased need for nutrients, and an increased need for down time. Otherwise… inevitable crash and burn.
Even 5 minutes a day of meditation can be enough to help the brain recalibrate. Ten minutes of yoga here and there is better than none. A green smoothie each day might just tip the balance back in our favour. Even small steps in the right direction make a huge difference over time.
What matters is that we begin.
